How to Decide Whether a Personal Locator Beacon Is Worth Carrying

A personal locator beacon (PLB) can be a sensible addition to a remote kayak trip, but it isn’t automatically the best safety device for every paddler. If most of your outings stay near cell coverage, a PLB may add cost and bulk without improving your everyday communication. If you regularly travel beyond help, however, its dedicated distress function can matter more than its limited messaging features.

The useful question isn't simply, “Should I buy a PLB?” It’s: What problem must my emergency equipment solve, and which device solves it with the fewest compromises?

Start with the remoteness of your trips

Your route should determine your equipment more than the device’s marketing category.

Consider four factors:

  • Cell coverage: Will your phone reliably connect from the launch, campsite, and likely trouble spots?
  • Rescue access: If you capsize or become injured, how long could it take for assistance to reach you?
  • Communication needs: Do you need to exchange messages, receive weather information, or only send a distress alert?
  • Self-rescue ability: Can you recover from a capsize, repair a small failure, or wait safely for help?

A short paddle on a busy lake is different from a multi-day coastal trip, an isolated river expedition, or a crossing where weather can prevent a quick return. The farther you are from reliable assistance, the more valuable a purpose-built distress device becomes.

Check your route’s real coverage: Before choosing equipment, review current cellular coverage, marine radio repeater availability, local emergency procedures, and any restrictions that apply to your route. Coverage maps can be optimistic around cliffs, islands, forest, and remote shorelines.

How the four options differ

Phone: useful when coverage and conditions cooperate

Your phone is often the cheapest communication tool because you already own it. It can call emergency services, share your location, display maps, provide weather information, and document trip details.

Its weakness is dependence. A phone needs a compatible network, sufficient battery power, and a usable signal. Water, cold, drops, and a wet touchscreen can also turn a convenient device into a poor emergency tool. A phone in a dry bag may be protected, but it may not be immediately accessible when you need both hands for your kayak or paddle.

A phone makes sense as part of almost every kit, but it shouldn't be your only emergency communication method when you knowingly travel outside reliable coverage.

Marine VHF radio: best for nearby maritime traffic and local support

A marine VHF radio can connect you with nearby vessels, marinas, harbor offices, and other listeners. It is particularly useful on coastal water, busy waterways, and routes where other boaters are likely to hear a distress call.

VHF range is largely limited by antenna height, terrain, and the presence of receiving stations or repeaters. A handheld radio may work well across open water but poorly around headlands, steep shorelines, or bends in a river. It also requires you to know basic radio procedure and monitor the appropriate channels.

A VHF radio is a communication tool, not a guaranteed rescue beacon. On a quiet, remote lake, there may be nobody within range to hear you. In many situations, it complements a PLB or satellite communicator rather than replacing one.

Satellite communicator: two-way contact with ongoing costs

A satellite communicator can send and receive messages beyond cell coverage, depending on its satellite network, antenna view, device settings, and service plan. Many models also offer tracking, location sharing, weather information, and an emergency SOS function.

Two-way communication is its main advantage over a PLB. You may be able to explain what happened, tell responders whether anyone is injured, receive instructions, or update a contact as your situation changes. That information can reduce uncertainty for both you and the people trying to help.

The trade-offs are subscription fees, charging requirements, device operation, and dependence on a clear enough view of the sky. Some services require an active plan for SOS or messaging. A communicator is only useful if you keep it charged, carry it where you can reach it, and understand how its emergency workflow operates.

PLB: a focused distress signal without a regular service plan

A PLB is designed primarily for one job: sending a distress alert through a dedicated satellite-based search-and-rescue system. When activated, it transmits your registered identity and location information to the relevant emergency response network. Many units also transmit a homing signal that can help rescuers locate you near the end of a response.

A PLB’s strengths are its focused purpose, generally long shelf life, and lack of a routine messaging subscription. It doesn't depend on a nearby cell tower or another boater listening to a radio channel. That makes it attractive for remote trips where an emergency could be life-threatening and ordinary communication methods may fail.

Its limitations are just as important. A basic PLB usually doesn't let you chat with responders, send routine “I’m okay” messages, check weather, or share a live trip track. Activating it is a serious decision, and you shouldn't expect it to function like a general-purpose communication device.

Compare the costs beyond the purchase price

Cost and resource efficiency involve more than the price on the shelf.

Prices, service plans, registration requirements, and battery-replacement arrangements vary by model and country. A low purchase price can be misleading if you rarely use the device, while a subscription can be reasonable if you use messaging and tracking throughout a season.

Verify the current ownership cost: Check the manufacturer’s current service-plan terms, battery replacement or replacement-date instructions, registration process, and cancellation rules. Confirm that the model is approved for use where you paddle rather than relying on a listing from another country.

A useful calculation is to estimate your actual use. If you take two remote trips per year and only need a distress alert, a PLB may have lower long-term operating cost than a satellite messenger. If you send regular position updates, receive forecasts, or coordinate with a group, a communicator may provide more value even with a recurring fee.

Match the device to the failure you’re planning for

Different tools protect against different problems:

  • If you become separated from your group but still have cell service, a phone may be enough.
  • If a nearby paddler needs to hear your call, a VHF radio may be effective.
  • If you need to explain a non-life-threatening problem and receive advice, two-way satellite messaging is useful.
  • If you are seriously injured or stranded beyond ordinary coverage, a PLB provides a direct distress option.

You may not need to choose only one device. A phone plus a PLB is a simple pairing for paddlers who want ordinary communication and a dedicated emergency backup. A VHF radio plus a PLB can be more appropriate for coastal routes. A satellite communicator may replace some of the convenience functions of a phone outside coverage, but it doesn't necessarily replace a VHF radio where marine traffic and local radio support are important.

Questions to answer before carrying a PLB

A PLB is more likely to be worth carrying when you can answer “yes” to several of these questions:

  1. Do you regularly paddle beyond dependable cell coverage?
  2. Could weather, distance, or terrain make self-rescue difficult?
  3. Might you be hours or longer from organized assistance?
  4. Do you want emergency signaling without maintaining a messaging subscription?
  5. Are you willing to register, maintain, and learn the device properly?

It may be unnecessary as your primary investment when you stay close to populated shorelines, paddle with reliable phone coverage, and already have access to effective local emergency communication. Even then, trip conditions can change. A familiar route can become remote after a launch-point change, a storm, an early sunset, or a capsize that carries you away from your original plan.

Use the device as part of a system

No beacon compensates for poor preparation. Keep your chosen device accessible rather than buried in a hatch. Protect it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, check its charge or battery status, and learn the activation sequence before your trip.

Tell a responsible person where you’re going, when you expect to return, and what to do if you miss that check-in. Carry navigation tools, a way to stay warm and hydrated, and the equipment needed for the conditions. A PLB can summon help, but it doesn't prevent hypothermia, keep you upright, or guarantee an immediate response.

Avoid activating any emergency device casually. If you do activate a PLB or SOS function, follow the device instructions, stay with your kayak when it is safer to do so, and make yourself as visible as conditions allow. Emergency procedures and response capabilities differ by location, so learn the local process before traveling.

A sensible decision rule

Choose a PLB when your main concern is a serious emergency beyond reliable cell and radio coverage, and you want a dedicated distress tool without a regular messaging subscription.

Choose a satellite communicator when you value two-way communication, tracking, weather information, or routine updates enough to justify service costs and charging.

Choose a VHF radio when nearby maritime traffic, shore stations, or local radio users are likely to be part of your safety network.

Keep your phone for its broad everyday usefulness, but treat coverage and battery life as limitations rather than assumptions.

For many remote-trip paddlers, the most efficient setup isn't the most feature-rich one. It is the smallest combination that covers the route’s real hazards, that you can operate under stress, and that you will consistently carry and maintain.
