How to Keep a Kayak From Overheating During Summer Storage

Summer heat can deform a hull, stress fittings, and raise pressure inside an inflatable kayak when storage conditions are poor. I’ll explain how shade, ventilation, support, and material-specific care work together to protect your kayak through hot weather.

Heat becomes a storage problem when your kayak sits in direct sun, inside a closed vehicle, or on supports that concentrate pressure in one area. The damage may develop gradually: a hull can take on a permanent curve, plastic fittings can become brittle, and an inflatable kayak can experience excessive internal pressure.

The good news is that preventing summer heat damage usually comes down to a few manageable habits. Keep the kayak shaded, allow heat to escape, support it correctly, and follow the storage guidance for its material.

Why summer heat can damage a kayak

A kayak absorbs solar energy when it sits in direct sunlight. Dark surfaces and enclosed spaces can become especially hot, even when the surrounding air temperature feels tolerable. Heat can soften some kayak materials and cause them to expand, while repeated heating and cooling places additional stress on joints, fittings, and coatings.

The risks vary by kayak type:

  • Rotomolded polyethylene kayaks can soften and deform if they’re left in high heat under uneven pressure.
  • Thermoformed plastic kayaks may also be vulnerable to distortion when exposed to intense heat or poorly distributed support.
  • Composite kayaks are generally stiff, but prolonged heat can affect finishes, adhesives, deck hardware, and certain construction details.
  • Inflatable kayaks can experience increased internal pressure as the air warms. Heat may also accelerate wear in valves, seams, coatings, and fabric.

Heat rarely acts alone. A kayak sitting in the sun while fully loaded, tightly strapped, or resting on two narrow points is more likely to develop problems than one stored in shade with even support.

Choose shade before anything else

The simplest way to reduce overheating is to keep the kayak out of direct sunlight. A shaded garage, covered patio, storage shed, or ventilated canopy is preferable to an exposed driveway.

If outdoor storage is your only option, use a cover that provides shade without trapping excessive heat. A light-colored, breathable cover is usually a better choice than wrapping the kayak tightly in dark plastic. Leave enough space for air to circulate, and make sure rainwater can’t collect around the hull or cockpit.

A cover protects against ultraviolet exposure as well as heat. However, it isn’t a substitute for ventilation. A tightly sealed cover can create a hot pocket around the kayak, particularly when the cover is dark or rests directly against the hull.

Avoid placing the kayak where reflected sunlight can intensify heating. Light-colored walls, windows, concrete, and metal surfaces can all add heat to an already sunny storage area.

Store a hard-shell kayak with even support

Poor support can cause permanent deformation when heat softens the hull. The goal is to distribute the kayak’s weight across broad, padded contact points rather than allowing it to rest on a narrow edge or a pair of small hooks.

For most hard-shell kayaks, these practices help:

  • Store the kayak on its side using wide, padded supports.
  • Position supports near structurally strong areas, often around the cockpit region and toward the bow and stern, rather than at the extreme ends.
  • Use a wall rack, suspension system, or padded cradle designed for the kayak’s shape and weight.
  • Keep the hull off hot asphalt, concrete, metal, and other surfaces that can transfer heat directly.
  • Remove heavy gear, loose equipment, and water from the kayak before storage.

Don't leave a plastic kayak sitting flat on its hull for weeks or months unless the manufacturer specifically recommends that method and the support is broad and even. Flat storage can be acceptable in some situations, but concentrated pressure, a warm hull, and a long storage period create a poor combination.

Avoid hanging a kayak from narrow straps that pinch the hull. Straps should support the boat without creating deep pressure points. Check the kayak periodically during the hottest part of the season and adjust the supports if you notice flattening, dents, or a change in the hull’s shape.

Check your kayak’s storage points: Before setting up a rack or cradle, confirm the manufacturer’s recommended support locations and storage orientation. Hull shapes and materials differ, and the correct positions for one kayak may not suit another.

Keep inflatable kayaks cool and partly relaxed

Inflatable kayaks need a different approach. If the kayak is stored inflated, heat can increase the pressure inside the chambers. That pressure may put extra strain on seams, valves, baffles, and attachment points.

For long-term summer storage, follow the manufacturer’s instructions about whether the kayak should be deflated completely, partially deflated, or kept inflated. In many cases, deflating it, drying it thoroughly, and storing it loosely is the most practical option. Avoid folding it sharply in the same place every time, especially if the material is stiff from heat or cold.

Before packing an inflatable kayak:

  1. Rinse off salt, sand, mud, and other residue.
  2. Dry the exterior and interior areas completely.
  3. Release air according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Fold it loosely, avoiding tight creases around valves and fittings.
  5. Store it in a cool, dry, shaded place away from sharp objects and chemicals.

If you keep it inflated between outings, reduce the pressure as recommended by the manufacturer and move it out of direct sun. Don’t use a pressure reading from a different inflatable product as a substitute for the kayak’s instructions.

Don’t leave a kayak in a closed vehicle

A closed car, truck bed with a shell, or trailer can become much hotter than the outdoor air. The confined space also prevents heat from escaping. Even a kayak that is protected from direct sunlight can be exposed to damaging temperatures inside a vehicle.

Use a vehicle only for transportation or short-term staging when possible. Once you arrive, move the kayak to a shaded, ventilated location. For an inflatable kayak, avoid leaving it fully inflated inside a closed vehicle. Heat-related pressure changes can be more significant when the kayak has no way to cool down.

If a kayak must remain in a vehicle briefly, keep it out of direct sun, provide ventilation when safe and practical, and avoid tightly compressing it under other equipment. These steps reduce risk but don’t turn a hot enclosed vehicle into suitable long-term storage.

Protect fittings, hatches, and accessories

The hull often gets the most attention, but heat and sunlight can also affect the smaller components that make the kayak usable. Hatch covers, deck lines, rudder cables, foot-brace parts, seat materials, and plastic accessories can age faster when exposed to ultraviolet light and high temperatures.

Remove accessories that don’t need to remain installed, especially electronic devices, batteries, foam items, and gear that can trap moisture. Store removable parts in a shaded, dry location. Leave hatches open or loosely positioned when appropriate so moisture can escape, but don’t create an opening that lets rain, insects, or rodents into the kayak.

Inspect deck lines and bungees for brittleness or loss of elasticity. Look at hatch seals and fittings for cracking, distortion, or looseness. Replacing a small worn component is easier than discovering a failure on the water.

What to do after a kayak overheats

If a kayak has been sitting in severe heat, move it into shade and let it cool gradually. Don’t force a softened hull back into shape immediately, and don’t place a hot kayak against very cold water or use extreme temperature changes to cool it quickly.

Once it has cooled, inspect the hull for dents, flattened sections, oil-canning, loose fittings, and changes around the cockpit or hatches. An inflatable kayak should be checked for unusual pressure loss, bulges, seam separation, valve problems, or damage to the outer coating.

Minor shape changes may improve as the material cools, but a persistent deformation can affect tracking, stability, or fit in a rack. If the hull, seams, or attachment points appear seriously damaged, stop using the kayak until the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional has assessed it.

A simple summer storage routine

Use this routine after each outing during hot weather:

  1. Rinse the kayak to remove salt, grit, and residue.
  2. Dry it fully, including hatches, cockpit areas, and inflatable folds.
  3. Remove unnecessary gear so the hull and fittings aren’t carrying extra weight.
  4. Move it into shade before it sits for an extended period.
  5. Support a hard-shell kayak broadly and evenly.
  6. Reduce or release inflatable pressure as directed for your model.
  7. Cover it with ventilation in mind, rather than sealing it in dark plastic.
  8. Inspect it regularly during periods of extreme heat.

The best storage setup doesn’t need to be complicated. A shaded location, a suitable padded rack, and a little airflow will usually do more for your kayak than an expensive cover used in full sun.
