When to Replace Kayak Bungees, Deck Lines, and Straps

Tape, cable ties, glue, and additional knots may keep a noncritical item from flapping temporarily, but they don’t restore the original strength of damaged cord or webbing. Treat these measures as short-term organization, not a repair for safety- or transport-critical rigging.
Choose a suitable replacement
Match the replacement to the original function rather than choosing by appearance alone. Consider the cord diameter, stretch, cover construction, webbing width, buckle style, fitting type, and available adjustment range.
For deck bungees, use cord intended for outdoor exposure and route it in the same general pattern as the original. Avoid making it so tight that it constantly loads the fittings or makes it difficult to stow gear. Avoid using ordinary elastic cord where the kayak manufacturer designed a nonstretch deck line or a dedicated restraint.
For deck lines, use marine-appropriate line or the type specified for the kayak. The correct diameter needs to work with the existing fittings and knots. If a line is intended to support a handhold during a rescue, inspect the entire arrangement and follow the kayak manufacturer’s design rather than improvising a higher-tension system.
