Cracked handle or worn rope

Plastic handles can split near the fastener holes. Rope handles may become fuzzy, stiff, or flattened where they pass through the kayak. Webbing can fray or lose its stitching.

Replace a damaged handle or rope rather than trying to reinforce it with tape. A carry handle experiences concentrated loads, and a temporary patch can fail without much warning.

Damaged deck or mounting area

Support the handle while removing the nut or screw. Keep the hardware in order so you can compare it with the replacement parts. If the fastener is corroded, damaged, or the wrong size, replace it rather than reinstalling it.

Sealant choice depends on the kayak material and the manufacturer’s recommendations. Some products bond too aggressively, complicating future repairs, while others may not adhere well to certain plastics. On a kayak with a watertight hull, sealing the fastener holes is particularly important.

4. Reinstall the handle with washers

Position the handle correctly and install the fasteners, washers, and retaining hardware in their original arrangement or the arrangement specified for the replacement handle. Keep the handle aligned with the direction of the pulling force.

Tighten gradually and evenly. The handle should sit firmly against the deck, but the plastic shouldn't dimple, crush, or bulge around the washer. Over-tightening is a common way to damage a polyethylene deck or strip a threaded insert.

5. Let the sealant cure

Follow the sealant’s stated cure time before exposing the kayak to water or putting the handle under a lifting load. A surface that feels dry may not have developed its full strength or watertight seal.

Repair a rope or webbing handle

A rope or webbing handle is repairable only when the surrounding holes and deck are in good condition. Use replacement material with comparable diameter, strength, and resistance to water and abrasion. The handle must be comfortable to grip and long enough to provide clearance for your hand without excessive slack.

Remove the old material and inspect the holes for sharp edges. Sharp plastic can cut rope and create a new failure point. Install the replacement according to the kayak’s original design, using secure knots or hardware intended for that handle system.

Avoid tying a bulky knot where it can rub against the hull, interfere with a hatch, or prevent the handle from lying flat. After installation, pull firmly on the handle while the kayak remains supported. This is a check of the repair, not a substitute for inspecting the attachment area.

When tightening isn't the right repair

Stop and seek professional help if you find any of the following:

  • A crack spreading from the handle mounting holes
  • A damaged composite laminate or delaminated deck
  • A failed molded-in attachment point
  • A threaded insert that spins, pulls out, or can't hold the specified fastener

  • A handle used as part of a lifting system, rack, or rescue setup

A kayak repair shop can determine whether the deck needs plastic welding, a composite repair, a new insert, or a redesigned backing arrangement. This is especially important for a heavy fishing kayak, tandem kayak, or any boat routinely lifted by two people. A handle that only needs to guide the bow isn't necessarily suitable for supporting the kayak’s full weight.

Test the repair safely

Once the sealant has cured, inspect the fasteners and handle one more time. Move the handle gently in every direction and watch the deck for flexing or movement around the attachment.
