How to Remove Mildew Smell From a Kayak and Its Gear

Rinse thoroughly. Soap residue can attract dirt and leave a film that makes the surface look clean while retaining odor. Wipe the boat dry, then leave every compartment open until the interior is fully dry.
Avoid abrasive powders, rough scouring pads, and aggressive solvents. They can dull the surface or damage fittings and seals. A plastic hull generally doesn't need a harsh disinfectant simply because it smells musty.
Composite kayaks and painted surfaces
Fiberglass, carbon, and other composite kayaks may have a gelcoat, paint, or clear finish that reacts differently to cleaners. Use a mild, nonabrasive solution and a soft cloth first. Don't scrub aggressively at a discolored spot; what looks like mildew may be staining, surface wear, or a damaged finish.
If the odor is coming from a hatch or cockpit outfitting rather than the hull, clean those parts separately. Keep standing water away from exposed hardware, inspection ports, and areas where it could enter the laminate or foam structure.
Fabric, neoprene, and coated gear
Soft goods need enough cleaning to remove the organic residue causing the smell, but too much heat, friction, or chemical exposure can shorten their useful life.
For spray skirts, cockpit covers, dry bags, and fabric gear:

A PFD can retain sweat, salt, sunscreen, and water in its foam and straps. Hand-wash it with mild soap, rinse well, and dry it out of direct heat. Keep the flotation foam from being compressed during storage.
Avoid treating a PFD with bleach, solvent, fabric softener, or an unapproved deodorizing product. These may affect fabric, foam, stitching, or hardware. If the PFD has persistent odor, damaged flotation material, torn fabric, or questionable buoyancy, cleaning isn't a substitute for replacement or professional advice.

Different approaches have different trade-offs. Start with the least aggressive method that fits the material.
Mild soap and water
This is the best first choice for most routine mildew odors. It is inexpensive, easy to rinse away, and less likely to harm kayak finishes or soft goods. Its limitation is that it may not remove an established odor from thick foam, seams, or heavily contaminated fabric without repeated cleaning.
Diluted vinegar solutions
Some paddlers use diluted white vinegar to help with musty odors. It can be useful on compatible, washable surfaces, but it isn't appropriate for every coating, metal component, or piece of safety gear. The smell also lingers if the item isn't rinsed and dried thoroughly.
Never combine vinegar with bleach or products containing bleach. If you use vinegar, keep the solution mild, test it on an inconspicuous area, rinse the item, and allow it to air out completely.
Commercial mildew or boat cleaners
A cleaner labeled for marine fabrics, plastics, or the specific material can be convenient when ordinary soap isn't enough. Read the label carefully: a product made for a hard hull may be too harsh for a PFD, neoprene, coated fabric, or foam.
Commercial products also vary in whether they remove stains, kill organisms, or simply mask odor. Follow the product’s dilution, contact-time, ventilation, and rinsing directions rather than assuming more product will work better.
Bleach and strong disinfectants
Bleach may remove some stains, but it is a poor default choice for a kayak and its gear. It can fade fabric, weaken fibers, affect coatings, corrode hardware, and damage foam or adhesives. It also creates a hazardous reaction if mixed with ammonia, acids, or other cleaners.
Use it only when the material manufacturer specifically permits it and provides a safe method. For most recreational kayak gear, careful washing and complete drying are the more material-friendly solution.

Direct sunlight can help dry some durable materials, but prolonged exposure can fade fabric and contribute to degradation. Shade with good airflow is often a sensible compromise.
Don't seal the kayak in a vehicle, garage corner, or storage bag while any part of it is damp. A dry exterior doesn't prove that foam, seams, hatch interiors, or the inside of a folded skirt are dry.
If you need to speed up drying, use a fan or a well-ventilated area rather than high heat. Avoid placing plastic parts, foam, or coated fabrics against a hot heater or in a closed vehicle.
Prevent the smell from coming back

When cleaning isn't enough
