Try either garment in a paddling position. Reach forward, rotate your torso, lift your arms, bend your knees, and simulate a wet exit. If the garment feels acceptable only while standing, it may become uncomfortable in the kayak.
Layering

Maintenance and reliability
A wetsuit needs rinsing, drying, and occasional inspection for tears, stretched seams, or deteriorated areas. Avoid storing it compressed or damp, since that can contribute to odor and material damage.
A dry suit needs more attention. Rinse away salt, sand, and dirt; dry it thoroughly; inspect the neck and wrist seals; and follow the manufacturer’s guidance for zipper and gasket care. Check for leaks periodically, especially before a trip where a failure would be difficult to manage.
The seals are consumable parts. A small tear or poorly maintained zipper can turn a dry suit into a damp suit, so inspect it before every cold-water outing. Carry repair supplies appropriate to the suit and trip, but don’t assume an improvised field repair will restore full waterproof protection.
Troubleshoot the most common problems
You feel cold in a dry suit

You’re cold in a wetsuit but don’t want a dry suit
