How to Recover From a Failed Kayak Tow

I’ll compare the main ways a kayak tow can fail, explain how to stabilize a tired paddler without adding risk, and help you decide when to reset the tow, raft up, use a contact tow, or move to a different assisted-rescue method.

A failed tow can turn a manageable fatigue problem into a tangled line, an unstable kayak, or two paddlers needing help. The right response depends on what failed, how tired the assisted paddler is, and whether wind, current, waves, or traffic are making the situation worse.

Your first priority isn't to get the tow working again. It’s to stabilize both kayaks, communicate clearly, and choose the least complicated method that will move the group toward safety.

Stop the failed tow from becoming a second emergency

As soon as the tow behaves unexpectedly, tell the assisted paddler what you’re doing. Short commands work best:

  • “Stop paddling.”
  • “Stay upright.”
  • “Hold your paddle across the cockpit.”
  • “I’m releasing the tow.”

If the line is under tension, snagged, wrapped around a kayak, or pulling either boat off balance, release it using the tow belt’s quick-release system. Don’t put your hands into a loaded line, reach toward a moving carabiner, or try to untangle rope while the boats are still being pulled together.

Once the tow is released, keep the two kayaks close enough for communication but far enough apart that they won’t collide. In moving water, avoid allowing the boats to drift broadside into one another. The stronger paddler may need to position their kayak on the safer side of the tired paddler, using the conditions and available space to reduce windage and unwanted rotation.

If the failed line is in the water, account for it before changing position. A loose line can catch a paddle, rudder, skeg, foot, or propeller. If you can’t safely recover it immediately, leave it secured or cut it only if doing so is part of your practiced emergency procedure and won’t create another entanglement hazard.

Check your rescue plan: Before relying on a tow system, confirm that every paddler knows where the quick release is, how it operates under load, and what command means “release now.” Tow-belt designs and release procedures vary, so follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and your current rescue training.

Identify what actually failed

A tow that “doesn’t work” may have several different problems. Identifying the failure helps you avoid repeating it.

The line released unexpectedly

A carabiner may have clipped to the wrong point, a connection may have opened, or the tow belt may have shifted. First check the assisted paddler rather than immediately reconnecting. They may have been pulled off balance when the line released.

If both kayaks are stable and the connection point is accessible, you can reset the tow while stationary or nearly stationary. Keep the line short and organized, and make sure it leads clear of paddles, rudders, skegs, and deck hardware. If the same connection releases again, stop treating it as a minor adjustment. Change methods.

The line jammed or won’t release

A jammed quick release is a serious problem because the tow can keep transferring force when conditions change. Try the release according to the system’s design, but don’t lean into the line or twist your body around it. If you can’t release it promptly and the boats are becoming unstable, use the system’s backup procedure from your training, such as a dedicated rescue knife carried where it can be reached with either hand.

A knife isn't a substitute for a functioning release system. It also introduces risks around inflated clothing, dry suits, deck lines, and other paddlers. Practice accessing it without looking and keep your hands away from tensioned rope while cutting.

The line is too short, too long, or badly positioned

A short tow can bring the kayaks together in waves. A long tow creates more line in the water and makes it easier for the line to pass under a hull or catch equipment. A line may also be attached to a point that makes the assisting kayak difficult to control.

If the system is intact but the arrangement is unsafe, release it and move to a simpler technique. A technically correct tow is still a poor choice if the rescuer can’t steer, communicate, and release it quickly.

The rescuer can’t make progress

A tow can fail without any hardware problem. Wind, current, chop, a loaded kayak, a damaged rudder, or a paddler who is no longer able to help may exceed the rescuer’s capacity. Pulling harder often increases yaw and instability rather than producing useful forward movement.

Treat a lack of progress as information. Stop, reassess the destination, and consider whether the group should move to shore, shelter behind an obstacle, call for outside assistance, or use a different rescue method.

Stabilize the tired paddler before choosing a replacement

A tired paddler may be physically exhausted, cold, anxious, seasick, injured, or experiencing a medical problem. Ask simple questions and look for changes in speech, coordination, alertness, and ability to follow instructions.

Have the paddler keep their torso centered and their paddle available for balance. If they can paddle, ask for light, controlled strokes rather than a hard effort. If they can’t paddle effectively, don’t assume that a tow alone will solve the problem.

A raft-up is often the best temporary reset when conditions allow. Bring the kayaks together in a controlled way, have the paddlers hold stable contact points, and let the tired paddler rest while the group reassesses. The exact hand and boat positions depend on the kayak designs, deck rigging, and conditions. Avoid asking someone to hold a slippery line or a rudder that could move unexpectedly.

A raft-up isn't automatically safe in breaking waves, strong current, or heavy boat traffic. In those conditions, the group may need to move toward a safer location rather than remain connected for an extended period.

If the paddler is cold, address insulation and shelter as part of the problem. If they are confused, unusually weak, in pain, short of breath, or unable to stay upright, treat the situation as a potential medical emergency rather than ordinary fatigue.

Choose the simplest assisted-rescue method that fits

There isn’t one universal replacement for a failed tow. Consider the paddler’s condition, the water, your equipment, and whether the method leaves the rescuer able to control their own kayak.

Reset the tow

Reset the tow only when the failure is understood and both paddlers are stable. Use a clear connection point, remove slack that can foul equipment, and confirm the release verbally before moving.

A reset makes sense when the problem was a misplaced clip, a loose arrangement, or a manageable line-routing issue. It is a poor choice when the belt, hardware, line, or release mechanism is damaged, or when the rescuer is already struggling to control the kayak.

Use a short contact tow

A contact tow keeps the kayaks close and may be useful in sheltered water with a cooperative paddler. The rescuer maintains physical contact with the assisted kayak or an appropriate carry point while using the other hand and paddle to control the boat.

This method demands attention. Don’t wrap a line around your wrist, hand, paddle, or body. Don’t grab a rudder, skeg control, deck line under load, or a loose piece of gear. The assisted paddler should remain responsible for their own balance as much as they can.

A contact tow is usually a poor choice in waves or strong current if it prevents the rescuer from paddling and steering effectively.

Raft up and move as a unit

When the tired paddler can stay upright and follow directions, a raft-up can provide a rest period and allow another paddler to take a more favorable position. Depending on the group’s training, the kayaks may then be moved together with coordinated strokes or a controlled push from the assisting boat.

This is primarily a stabilization and short-distance movement option. It may not be suitable for a long open-water crossing, and it can make the combined group more vulnerable to wind and waves.

Assist a reentry before towing

If the paddler is in the water because of a capsize, deal with the capsize first. A tow line attached to an empty or partially flooded kayak doesn’t replace an assisted reentry, emptying technique, or swimmer support.

Once the paddler is back in a stable kayak, reassess their condition. They may still be too cold, tired, or disoriented to continue. If a reliable reentry can’t be completed, move toward a practiced swimmer-rescue or extraction plan and summon help early.

Move to shore or request outside assistance

Sometimes the correct alternative isn't another on-water towing technique. If the paddler can remain stable, the safest destination may be a nearby protected shore. If they can’t remain stable, conditions are deteriorating, or the group lacks the equipment or training for the next step, contact emergency services or other appropriate assistance.

In the United States, the correct emergency contact and marine communication options depend on location and the type of waterway. Know how your local system works before the trip, and carry communication equipment in a way that remains accessible after a capsize.

When to stop trying to tow

Switch from problem-solving to emergency response when any of these conditions apply:

  • The paddler is unconscious, confused, injured, or unable to follow directions.
  • The paddler can’t stay in or beside the kayak without continuous physical support.
  • Either kayak is taking on water or repeatedly capsizing.
  • The tow or rescue equipment is entangled and can’t be released promptly.
  • Wind, waves, current, cold, or traffic are separating the group from a safe option.
  • The rescuer is becoming exhausted or losing control of their own kayak.
  • The group has no reliable way to complete the next rescue step.

Don’t wait for a tow failure to become a full capsize before calling for help. A clear early message gives rescuers more useful information and gives the group more time to reach a safer position.

Prevent the next failure

After the paddler is safe, inspect the tow system before using it again. Check the belt, stitching, release handle, line, clips, attachment points, and any hardware that was loaded unexpectedly. Replace questionable components rather than improvising a repair on the water.

Practice more than just deploying the tow. Each group leader should be able to:

  1. Put the system on and release it while wearing the clothing used on trips.
  2. Recognize and clear common line-routing problems.
  3. Stabilize a tired paddler before attaching a tow.
  4. Communicate a release command that everyone understands.
  5. Switch from a tow to a raft-up, contact method, reentry, or shore plan.
  6. Decide when personal limits require outside assistance.

A tow is one tool in a rescue sequence, not a guarantee that a tired paddler can be pulled anywhere. On your next practice session, deliberately simulate a failed connection in calm, shallow conditions and rehearse the transition to your backup method. The goal is a controlled decision—not a stronger pull on a system that has already shown you it isn’t working.
