When a reservoir is worth the extra effort
Choose a reservoir when the convenience of frequent sipping outweighs the maintenance and freeze risk. It can be a strong option if you paddle long distances, dislike removing a bottle with gloves, or have a secure insulated compartment near your seat.
A reservoir is less attractive when the route is short, temperatures are well below freezing, the hose must remain exposed, or you can't separate it from vulnerable dry gear. In those situations, bottles usually offer better simplicity and easier recovery if something goes wrong.
You can also use both systems: a reservoir for small, regular drinks and a bottle as backup. This combination gives you convenience without making a frozen hose or leaking bladder a total loss. Keep the backup bottle protected and accessible enough to use, not buried at the bottom of a hatch.
