How to Handle a Kayak That Fills With Water During Rain

Water in a sit-inside cockpit
A sit-inside kayak can collect rainwater around your legs and hips. If the cockpit is open, a heavy shower may add more water than you can comfortably ignore, especially if the boat has a large recreational cockpit.
Water may also enter through:
- An uncovered cockpit opening
- A loose or poorly fitted spray skirt
- A paddle shaft resting across the cockpit and directing water inward

Let a sit-on-top drain naturally
Don't block scupper holes on a sit-on-top kayak unless the manufacturer specifically recommends doing so for your model and conditions. Scupper plugs may improve comfort in some situations, but they can also prevent water from draining.
If the kayak is carrying a large amount of water, move toward shore while keeping your weight centered. Once ashore, tilt or drain the kayak according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid lifting a waterlogged kayak by yourself if the extra weight could strain your back or damage the handles.
Protect the gear that keeps you safe
Water-resistant storage is more useful than trying to keep every part of the kayak dry. Secure bags so they can't roll under your legs or interfere with a wet exit. A dry bag that floats away after a capsize isn't much help, even if its contents stay dry.
Decide when continuing is impractical
Rain alone doesn't automatically require you to end a trip. Continuing becomes a poor choice when water is accumulating faster than you can remove it, the kayak is sitting noticeably lower, or you can't operate the pump or bailer without losing stability.
Head ashore promptly if:
- The cockpit is filling and your boat feels sluggish or unstable
- Water is entering through a damaged hull, hatch, or bulkhead
- You can't keep essential gear dry or accessible
- Wind, waves, current, lightning, or poor visibility is developing
- You are cold, tired, or no longer confident in your ability to recover from a capsize
- Your planned landing point is becoming difficult to reach safely
Choose the nearest suitable landing area rather than insisting on returning to your launch point. A beach, sheltered bank, dock, or other accessible location may be the safer option, depending on the waterway and local access rules.
Find and fix the cause after landing
Drain the kayak fully and inspect it before paddling again. Remove the hatch covers, drain plugs, and other removable parts as the design allows. Let compartments dry so you can identify the path of the water.
Look for:
- Torn or flattened hatch gaskets
- Grit or debris on sealing surfaces
- Loose drain plugs
- Cracks around fittings or handles
- Damaged deck lines and attachment points
- A split or poorly bonded seam
- A spray skirt that no longer fits the cockpit rim
- Blocked or damaged scupper holes
You can often solve minor leaks by cleaning and reseating a seal or replacing an inexpensive gasket. Don't rely on tape or sealant as a permanent repair for structural damage. If water enters a sealed compartment or the hull shows a crack, have the kayak assessed or repaired before returning to the water.
A simple leak test at home can help. Keep the kayak level, add only a small amount of water where the suspected leak is located if the manufacturer’s guidance permits it, and look for drips from the outside.
